Rates and Mechanism of the Reaction of Aquaoxomolybdenum(IV) Trimer with Thiocyanate

Abstract
Kinetic studies on the complexing of aquamolybdenum(¥³) trimer with thiocyanate have been carried out using the spectrophotometric method. The observed rate constant, kobsd is given by kobsd = {kO + kH[H+]2}(SCN-) + kr. At 25¡É and ionic strength of 2.30 the values of kf and kr are (3.78 ¡¾ 0.61) ¡¿ 10-4M-1s-1 and (6.93 ¡¾ 2.39) ¡¿ 10-4s-1, respectively. Activation parameters are ¥ÄH* = 50.71 ¡¾ 6.91 kJmol-1 and ¥ÄS* = -121.65 JK-1mol-1. The mechanism is proposed and discussed.
